Protecting the Great Barrier Reef

Published: 26th September 2011

The Australian Government’s Caring for our Country – Reef Rescue program will provide further funding to the Great Barrier Reef Foundation to develop eReefs, a tool to evaluate and improve water quality outcomes through improved monitoring, modelling and visualisation programs.

eReefs will help improve the understanding of impacts on the reef from threats such as climate change, while showing how the reef is affected by changes in weather patterns, land use practices, water use and neighboring communities.

Minister for Environment The Hon. Tony Burke MP said the aim of eReefs was to integrate and communicate what is known about the reef and the impacts on it.

Once developed, eReefs has the potential to become a visualisation and planning tool that will be essential to the design of future marine and catchment focused management programs and policies.

Furthermore, eReefs may assist with broader government and industry reporting requirements, including State of the Environment reporting, Great Barrier Reef Outlook reports and Reef Plan report cards.
